The European People’s Party has adopted in its Working Group on Economic Policy a position paper on EU’s new strategy for sustainable economic growth, the EU2020 strategy . The Working Group is co-chaired by EPP Vice President MEP Gunnar Hökmark, who explains:
“EU’s 2020 strategy is a step in the right direction, but the urgency of this reform process must be further reinforced. We, therefore, call for a 2020 strategy, which clearly spells out what the EU can do today to promote sustainable economic growth, job development and cohesion in Europe. Actions to bring down public deficits in order to restore confidence in European economies and the Euro must be the first priority of the 2020 strategy. There will be no growth unless Europe rapidly returns to long term sustainable public finances.”
Europe has all the resources necessary to create the next Internet champion. The only ingredients missing are political vision and bold policies.

Nyss drev den spanska socialdemokratiska regeringen fram ett sparprogram på 150 miljarder kronor. Frågan är om det är tillräckligt för att rädda den spanska ekonomin. Märkligt nog skulle socialdemokraten Marita Ulvskog och hennes europeiska partivänner vilja utsätta oss alla för den spanska sjukan.
Även efter nedskärningar beräknas årets spanska budgetunderskott i förhållande till bruttonationalprodukten, BNP, uppgå till 9,3 procent och för nästa år 6 procent. The decision by the Slovenian people in this weekend’s referendum to back international arbitration of the border dispute with Croatia was welcomed on Monday by Gunnar Hökmark, chair of the EP Delegation to the EU-Croatia Joint Parliamentary Committee.
“The agreement reached through EU-sponsored talks during the Swedish presidency, and the ratification of the agreement, is an example to the whole of South-Eastern Europe that neighbour-to-neighbour disagreements can be resolved if leaders have the political will to do so”, said Mr Hökmark. ”The democratic development in the neighbourhood of the EU will not emerge by itself. It is about active choices of directions where western democracy is only one alternative. The actions of EU and the US are important for the progress of these countries. Long term stability, idea of open society, rule of law, market economy developed in the countries of Eastern Partnership will have impact on the member states of the EU,” underlined EPP Group Vice Chairman Gunnar Hökmark MEP, who chaired a seminar on the EU’s neighbourhood policy in the premises of the European Parliament in Brussels.

”Att diskutera långsiktiga förändringar som kan få fart på ekonomin är nödvändigt. Men tyvärr finns en uppenbar risk att EU2020-strategin blir en täckmantel för dem som ytterligare vill förhala och försena viktiga strukturella reformer. EU2020 blir ett alibi för de som vill blunda för akuta problem som måste åtgärdas idag. Det blev uppenbart och tydligt när den socialistiska gruppen hoppade av arbetet med en gemensam resolution just för att den krävde konkreta åtgärder i nutid för att återgå till stabila offentliga finanser och konkreta tillväxt reformer.
