Den 12 januari 1991 reste ordföranden i det litauiska parlamentets utrikesutskott till Sverige. När han landat hade hans hemstad Vilnius bokstavligen ockuperats av sovjetiska OMON-trupper.
Syftet var att krossa självständighetssträvandena och att göra människor rädda. Natten till söndagen den 13 januari kom att bli den blodiga natten då de sovjetiska trupperna med stridsvagnar gick till attack mot demonstranter som stod i vägen till det viktiga tv-tornet. ”We can no longer accept that the authoritarian regime of Belarus would still take the advantages of being part of the Eastern Partnership which is designed to promote the Eastern neighbours of the European Union, while it still acts as a brutal dictatorship. The response of the Belarusian authorities on the demonstrations in the centre of Minsk on the Election Day is unacceptable and must be followed by a proper response from the European Union. Today, Minister of State for Infocommunications Zsolt Nyitrai, representing the Hungarian EU Presidency, Neelie Kroes, EU Commission Vice-President responsible for the Digital Agenda, and Gunnar Hökmark, the European Parliament’s chief rapporteur for spectrum met in Budapest to discuss the EU’s most immediate legislative dossier in telecoms, the proposed Radio Spectrum Policy Programme.
The participants agreed that more spectrum should be made available to foster a rapid increase in broadband deployment, particularly in remote areas, and that a smart and coordinated approach to the use of spectrum across the EU was essential.

– Det är viktigt att de länder som medvetet drivit en ansvarslös politik bär en större börda när en finansiell stödmekanism inom EU skapas. Det underströk Gunnar Hökmark (M) i Europaparlamentets debatt om den finansiella krisen på onsdagen. Länder som orsakade krisen genom ökade risker måste bära sitt ansvar.
