”Europe must be ambitious and create the right framework for a sustainable growth of wireless communication services”, Gunnar Hökmark MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group responsible for Parliament’s Report on the Radio Spectrum Programme, said today.
”Allocating frequencies for mobile services is crucial for the EU’s competitiveness and global leadership in the digital economy. The explosion of data traffic and consumer demand for bandwidth will lead to a lack of available spectrum in Europe. Solutions are being found elsewhere in the world and Europe cannot afford to lag behind”, Hökmark said. ”My vision is that the radio spectrum will act as a spearhead for achieving a competitive Single Market. Spectrum has an important role to play in breaking down barriers for European companies and entrepreneurs.”
”Technological progress has in the past secured new distribution opportunities for the cultural sector. We must ensure that this sector is not left behind in a new digital era. Innovation drives technological evolution at a speed which we cannot foresee. Today’s political decisions must encourage tomorrow’s innovations, as well as a more efficient use of spectrum”, Hökmark concluded.
