”The Radio Spectrum Policy Programme must lay the ground for a development where the EU can take the global lead regarding broadband speeds, mobility, coverage and capacity. The Industry Committee’s endorsement of this ambitious approach is very good news for the European economy”, said Gunnar Hökmark MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament and Parliament’s Rapporteur on the Radio Spectrum Policy Programme, following today’s vote on the spectrum programme in the Industry Committee.
”My proposal to free up additional spectrum for wireless broadband services, amounting to at least 1200 MHz by 2015, received broad support in the Committee. Today’s decision will help Europe to meet the increasing demand for mobile data traffic, thereby stimulating the development of new services and economic growth.”
”Global leadership is essential in order to establish a competitive digital single market working as a spearhead to open up the internal market for all EU citizens. Courageous political decisions are now needed to achieve such leadership and it is now up to Member States to contribute to make this a reality”, said Mr Hökmark.
