”The demand for mobile data traffic is growing with exponential speed. Estimates are that mobile broadband subscriptions will grow from 600 million 2010 to almost 5 billion in 2016. More spectrum is needed now if the world and Europe is going to benefit from the opportunities offered by mobile broadband”, said Gunnar Hökmark MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, following today’s vote in the European Parliament on the EU’s policy approach towards the ITU World Radio Communication Conference 2012.
”Allocating additional frequencies to mobile internet services is the most important issue to address at the WRC-12. The EU can play a crucial role in pushing this agenda forward”, highlighted Mr Hökmark.
”Allocating 1.200 MHz to mobile data traffic by 2015, as I proposed in the Radio Spectrum Policy Programme, should be a minimum target when governments meet to discuss strategic telecommunication issues at the WRC-12”, concluded Gunnar Hökmark.
