On the initiative of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, the EPP Party Congress adopted a key Resolution on the completion of the Single Market. Heads of State and Governments were asked to commit themselves to fully transposing and implementing Single Market legislation. The EPP strongly believes that the Single Market is the backbone of the European Union and it is the best vehicle for Europe’s economic recovery.
The Chairman of the EPP Group, Joseph Daul MEP, welcomed the clear message given by EPP leaders: ”Today we renewed our commitment to serve European citizens. Since its creation 20 years ago, the Single Market has been a vessel for growth and jobs in Europe. The four freedoms of movement of people, services, goods and capital, which are at the heart of the Single Market, have become synonymous with the EU. Our engagement to promoting our four freedoms is an engagement to grow out of the economic crisis.”
”A fully functioning Single Market is a crucial factor to reviving the European economy. We are glad that EPP leaders have decided to create a robust EPP framework to address implementation and policy challenges related to the Single Market. We are now reinforcing our commitment to make it the EU’s top priority. This is good news for business and the EU’s 500 million consumers”, said Gunnar Hökmark MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group, and Andreas Schwab MEP, EPP Group Coordinator in the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee of the European Parliament.
”Businesses and entrepreneurs must be able to freely sell and distribute services to a 500 million consumer market. We must create a modern Single Market legislation that can facilitate Europe’s transformation into a world-leading knowledge economy. Concrete reforms are needed and we must start today”, added Gunnar Hökmark.
”Yesterday’s decision sends a strong political message that the EPP family is serious about the Single Market. Implementing already agreed rules is a crucial first step towards more growth in Europe and a minimum condition to ensuring Europe’s credibility”, said Andreas Schwab.
