15 years ago telephone services as well as air transport were public services of general interest. If there at the time had been a framework directive protecting the old structures and old methods we would have missed all the radical improvements in those sectors ever since, noted Gunnar Hökmark.
Contrary to protection and conservation we need improvements and entrepreneurship in important services. As the Commission now can proceed with sectorial directives opening for competition and freedom of choice we will see lower costs, better services and cross border competition. A more dynamic Europe based on the internal market and subsidiarity will benefit all Europeans, underlines Gunnar Hökmark.
