Today Gunnar Hökmark expressed concern regarding the forthcoming decision by the Georgian Supreme Court on the ownership dispute of the independent television channel Rustavi 2, and its potentially adverse effects on media plurality, editorial independence and transparent media ownership.
“It is of outmost importance that Rustavi 2 stays independent and that Georgia has a strong judicial system. Georgian authorities must respect property rights and the independence of Rustavi 2, and allow for proper judicial process to take place in accordance with European and international practices.”
“Georgia is a European society and nation, and in this context, independent media is needed, even when it is uncomfortable. We need to agree on freedom of speech and an independent judicial system. I hope the forthcoming decision by the Georgian Supreme Court will be consistent with European practices.” said Gunnar Hökmark.
