Pressrelease: EU should have the world’s best conditions for mobile broadband services

  • av

”Our goal should be to make Europe the world leader in broadband and mobile internet. Reforms should be implemented to restore European telecom leadership by creating a digital single market. An efficient digital market will serve as an enabler for the single market for the whole European economy, thus creating not only the biggest economy in the world but also the leading and most dynamic market.”

In my Report, I raise the ambition to give Europe the best possible conditions for mobile broadband services”, explained Gunnar Hökmark MEP, Vice-Chairman of the EPP Group, presenting his Report on the Common Spectrum Policy to the Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Committee of the European Parliament on Monday.

”I propose the ambitious target of allocating at least 1200MHz by 2015 to wireless services, enabling global leadership while creating the best conditions for broadband as well as television through mobile internet, thereby including the cultural as well as the commercial sector”, said Gunnar Hökmark.

European leadership in the 90s derived from an early deregulation and the introduction of a common GSM standard. The advantages contributed to the industrial development for a decade.

Since then, global leadership has moved on to others that profit from huge consumer markets and better possibilities to introduce new technologies, new services as well as from improvements created by the information technologies.

”I want Europe to restore its leadership”, concludes Gunnar Hökmark.
