”The overall purpose of a special directive on services of general interest is to preserve and protect the services that exist, not to stimulate improvement and renewal for the public good.
”It is not the actual services that need protection but citizens that need to be ensured that services will be provided. In modern times it is flexibility, innovation, competition renewal and the empowerment of people that are the most important factors to secure essential services to citizens”, concludes MEP Gunnar Hökmark.
